Community Media Trust provides demand creation for voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) through our Siyayinqoba health brand.  Man Up / Soka is an above the line and below the line communications campaign which targets men aged 15-34 to increase the demand for VMMC. Research shows that VMMC reduces a man’s risk of getting HIV by 60%. It also reduces the risk of other sexually transmitted infections. VMMC has been adopted by the National Department of Health and PEPFAR as one of the most effective ways to curtail the incidence of HIV in South Africa, and CMT is proud to be a part of this initiative.

In the Western Cape, famous Good Hope FM DJ, Ready D and Malikah Daniels, a prominent South African drifter, represent Man Up. Two Man Up-branded drifting cars can be seen in action at many of the community activations, drawing men from the target audience to public events where VMMC services are promoted and available.

In 2018, CDC consolidated the South African VMMC programme under Jhpiego (a John Hopkins University Affiliate) and Society for Family Health (SFH). CMT continued with the Man Up / Soka campaign in Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal and aligned all demand creation activities to the service delivery partners’ targets. The campaign includes radio, television, social media, outdoor, print, video, standardised branding, IEC material development, and social mobilisation.

Soka in KwaZulu-Natal

In KwaZulu-Natal, award-winning Maskandi artist Khuzani represents the SOKA campaign. Khuzani wrote a song for the campaign called Soka Ndoda. CMT produced a music video and took Khuzani on tour in KZN to promote voluntary medical male circumcision, reaching the target audience through the song, live performances and other public events that Khuzani attends. Mobilisers for VMMC promote and refer interested men to VMMC services.
