Funda is a reality television series which aims to highlight the issues affecting learners in South Africa – and to show ways in which learners can bring about change and take responsibility for their own education. ‘Funda’ translates from isiXhosa as ‘Learn’.
The series will deal with issues raised by learners across the country, such as access to libraries and books, the school feeding scheme, the quality of teaching, overcrowding, being on time for school, career choices, sports and recreation and many more.
The series will follow a reality TV competition format and will be filled with challenges which feature the learners organising themselves and their communities to better the conditions in their schools.
The aim of the series is to allow learners to voice their feelings about their schools and their education system, as well as to instil a sense of ownership and pride in South African education. Contestants and viewers alike will learn how to solve problems, how to become active citizens and participate in democracy and the national conversation on education.
