Documentaries and Features

Since 1993 the Community Media Trust (CMT) production team has been making documentaries through Idol Pictures – the company formed by Jack Lewis with the goal of examining historical and contemporary issues in development, education and culture for a mass audience.

Collectively the documentaries form an exploration of social development and human rights in the South African context. Through their work the filmmakers have considered matters of race, the law, health, education, language, gender and sexuality.

In 2010 the Idol Pictures library was transferred to CMT which – still led by Jack Lewis – continues to produce socially relevant films. CMT’s most recent documentary, TAC: Taking HAART is a fly on the wall documentary following the Treatment Action Campaign’s journey to treatment.
